IV International Congress – Buenos Aires 2010
“Suffering in the links and its transformations through couple and family psychoanalysis”
Argument
During our congress we will have debates on the concept of link. Prime theoretical and practical reference for many couples and families analysts, this concept encompasses that of object relationship and spreads beyond by introducing the unavoidable reciprocity of the investments. This means that it includes the reality of the other and his subjectivity. The concept of link, which deals with the movements of affects, fantasies, representations, can be connected to other concepts: alliance, filiation, affiliation, attachment, intersubjectivity. We are then led to think of the various modalities (intrapsychical, interpsychical, transpsychical) and operational spheres of the link (family, institution and culture). One question arises from this: could the link, embedded in the heart of the whole of the processes linking-unlinking-relinking, be at the same time the agent of psychical development and that of the psychical suffering?
How can we transform the suffering in the links so as to benefit the couple or the family? The sufferings which show themselves in the link come in many shapes and forms, on a clinical level as well as in the psychopathological register under which they are. We have to comprehend their origin, the processes which move them, their appearance and effect to be able to elaborate them. To this end, various measures need to be built by the analyst and the patient together, from typical sessional family treatment to consultations or home care. Within these measures, how and when should we interpret the unconscious agreements reached by all involved, their complicity, subjugation, damaging deals? The analyst should pay particular attention to generational aspects. In any case, the therapist faced with suffering and the resistances which go with it, shall use the counter-transference analysis, together with that of the transferential data to make his/her decision.
We should think through a few clinical forms: narcissistic perversion, incest, closed paradoxicality, violence, extreme rigidity of faith and ideals, generational traumatic après-coups, denial and foreclosure. The devices used to access symbolisation (drawing, genogram, psychodrama), the way the therapist‘s attention is expressed, his style and personal techniques will also give food for thoughts.
“Suffering in the links and its transformations through couple and family psychoanalysis”
Argument
The choice of theme signals a common concern i.e. what is the best way to transform suffering in couple and family links?
This suffering expresses itself in many complex ways, in its clinical and psychopathological forms, in its processes, and in its determining factors. Experience teaches us to identify its manifestations and effects, to understand it and to alter it. To gain access to it, we construct – together with the families and within the new therapeutic group – a setting that is adapted to the capacities of the family and the analyst, and which will take various different forms: family-type treatment, discussions, home care, triadic therapy (father, mother, child), etc.
The diversity of our theories adds to the overall complexity of the subjects we shall explore. In presenting our thoughts, we shall emphasise the one perspective that federates these diverse approaches, the perspective of the psychoanalyst in session, who encounters this suffering and the many kinds of resistance to transforming it.
In order to shed some light on our counter-transference movements and our therapeutic choices, we also need to take into account the effects and transformations that traumas and disasters cause to the psyche and the links in biological and socio-cultural terms, as well as both current and generational family organisation.
What common themes can we pick out of this whole from our chosen perspective i.e. the psychoanalytic session?
This congress will, first of all, provide an opportunity to discuss the concept of the link, to initiate a comparative study and – depending on our cultural and theoretical interests – to ask ourselves what distinguishes the link from other related concepts such as alliance, filiation, affiliation, attachment, etc. How do we articulate the various different registers of the link – the intrapsychic, the interpsychic (or intersubjectivity or intersubjectality), the group aspects of a family in its shared and community dimensions, the institutional and the cultural – as we pay attention and listen in our sessions? Doesn’t the concept of the link describe a complex interaction of processes – binding/unbinding/re-binding – in life and in treatment, an interaction that can favour either growth or suffering?
Based on our experiences, we shall explore the clinical forms of suffering in couple and family links, the contexts in which it occurs, the processes by which it comes about. We shall look in more detail at some of its manifestations: narcissistic perversion, incestuality, closed paradoxality, forms of violence, extremist ideals, generational post-traumatic shock, denial and foreclosure, dysfunctional processes of authority, etc. In fact, making this kind of summary list just goes to show how entangled the processes are that cause suffering in the link, in the destiny of the drives, and in how the affects are regulated and shared.
How should we take account of these processes, in particular based on counter-transference during the first meetings, as we seek to establish the analytical setting and adapt its technical form to the presumed capacities of the family and our own as psychoanalysts?
This is the starting point for another group of considerations – the tools for transformation and forms of resistance to it. During the early stages of treatment, the psychoanalyst is often severely tested: the formation of the group increases the expression of drives and the repetition of traumatic experiences. Physical ordeals, violent or counter-invested affects, unusual fantasies, reminiscences, and a compulsion to theorise are useful points of reference we need to recognise and – later – understand. This counter-transference material indicates the acting of the suffering family in session.
What symbolisation processes should we put in place to work through the repetitions that emerge in treatment? Modalities of our presence, capacity (tenderness, firmness, attention…), co-associativity, figurative mediation (psychodrama, drawing, genogram, etc.) that contribute to the transitional process, interpretations, (re-)constructions, storytelling, etc. Certain clinical configurations, such as narcissistic perversion, incestuality, closed paradoxality, pathological secrets, the return of the denied, require particularly complex therapy.
This is where we reach the limits of our capacity to transform. What have we learnt from experience that enables us to start psychoanalysis or, on the contrary, to abstain from it? These are some of the subjects that we will be able to look at in more detail at our congress.

Submission of abstracts to send with registration form
Participants are kindly invited to submit abstracts for presentation in Congress on one of the proposed themes in one of the official languages. The presentation must concern a recent original study or research (not more three years old) and not have been published.
Deadline is March 15, 2010. The Scientific Committee will review all the abstracts, decide which presentations will be included in the programme and in what form: conference, round table, debate, workshop or forum. Authors of abstracts will be notified on advice of Committee.
The text must include the title of the presentation, the surname and first name of the author(s), the institution, university, association, address of the author (s) and the language of oral presentation. The length must be less than 1500 characters. So that quality and originality of the work can be fully evaluated, the presentation should be centred on a single line of study, objectives and results should be clearly described, and preferably illustrated by examples of psychoanalytic family or couple therapy. Theoretical or case oriented papers are also welcome.
The papers will approach, at different levels, each of the four axes of the title: 1) sufferings within the links of couple and family, 2) specificities of these inter-subjective links, 3) their transformation, 4) within a framework of psychoanalysis of couple and family.
Submission of an abstract does not constitute a registration for the Congress. Please complete the separate registration form. Final acceptance of submissions is therefore on condition that the author is registered for participation at the Congress.

How to get to the Belgrano University
Public transportation
Buenos Aires is a great city that offers various means of transportation to all areas of the city (Capital Federal), to the suburbs (Greater Buenos Aires), and virtually to any point of the country.
“Subte” (underground)
- The “subte” (underground) is the fastest way to get around within Capital Federal.
- The ticket has a fixed price and can be bought at any ticket office at any station.
- The service runs from Monday to Saturday 06:00 am to 11:00 pm and on Sundays from 08:00 am to 10:00 pm
- The closest stations to Torre Universitaria (approximately 500 meters) are Olleros Station and the José Hernández Station of the D Line.
Taxi
Buenos Aires has an excellent and very inexpensive service of taxis. The taxis can be identified by their black and yellow colors and they can be taken in the street but it is safer if they are requested by telephone (“radiotaxis”).
“Colectivo” (buses)
- The bus, called “ómnibus” or “autobús” (can also be called “micro” or “colectivo”), is one of the most utilized means of transport within the Capital Federal and Greater Buenos Aires. The cost depends on the distance travelled and it is paid by expending machines placed within the bus. It is preferable to pay with coins because they do not accept paper money.
- The bus lines that reach Torre Universitaria from downtown are numbers 29, 59, 60, 68, 152.

The city of Buenos Aires is the capital of the Argentine Republic; it is situated in the southern hemisphere of the South American continent, latitude 34º 36′ and longitude 58º 26′. The city extends throughout an expanse of territory that extends to 202 square kms. Approximately 3 million people live there. Adding the population of the metropolitan area, the total population exceeds 10 million inhabitants, making it one of the 10 most populated urban centers of the world.
The climate of Buenos Aires is mild and favorable all year round. The annual average temperature is 18°C with the exception of very rare days of intense heat or cold. Nonetheless, the weather allows for scenic walks through the city in any season. The coldest month is July. Even though there are no frosts or snow, it is necessary to go out with woolen pullovers, coats or overcoat and scarf. In winter, the cold is mild during the day but the temperatures decreases considerably during the night.
Buenos Aires is a safe city, but as in all great metropolises of the world, some cautions have to be taken. For example, do not leave bags and handbags hanging from your seat in public places or walk by night in streets with little illumination.
