comes up against issues relating to History (social, cultural and\u00a0 political)\u00a0 and\u00a0 individual\u00a0 histories.\u00a0 The\u00a0 conference\u00a0 will\u00a0 reflect\u00a0 on\u00a0 ways\u00a0 that\u00a0 technique\u00a0 varies\u00a0 according\u00a0 to\u00a0 clinicians\u2019\u00a0 theoretical\u00a0 and\u00a0 cultural\u00a0 influences.\u00a0 Clinical\u00a0 technique\u00a0 can\u00a0 emphasize historical\u00a0 reconstruction,\u00a0 or\u00a0 there\u00a0 can\u00a0 be\u00a0 a\u00a0 greater\u00a0 emphasis\u00a0 on\u00a0 the\u00a0 \u2018here\u00a0 and\u00a0 now\u2019\u00a0 as\u00a0 an\u00a0 elucidation of the history as lived out in the present.<\/p>\n<p>We\u00a0 will\u00a0 examine\u00a0 the\u00a0 nature\u00a0 of\u00a0 trauma\u00a0 transmitted\u00a0 intergenerationally,\u00a0 and\u00a0 the\u00a0 unconscious\u00a0 phantasies\u00a0 that\u00a0 inform\u00a0 the\u00a0 multiple\u00a0 narratives\u00a0 of\u00a0 the\u00a0 family\u00a0 romance.\u00a0 Traumatic\u00a0 experience\u00a0 is often\u00a0 carried\u00a0 silently\u00a0 within\u00a0 the\u00a0 couple\u00a0 and\u00a0 family\u00a0 links,\u00a0 sometimes\u00a0 escaping\u00a0 conscious\u00a0 understanding and expressed behaviourally rather than voiced in relation to the other or others.\u00a0 Transformation\u00a0 within\u00a0 couples\u00a0 and\u00a0 families\u00a0 depends\u00a0 upon\u00a0 the\u00a0 construction\u00a0 of\u00a0 a\u00a0 new\u00a0 and\u00a0 meaningful, historical understanding, rather than the discovery of a correct or actual biographical history.\u00a0 The\u00a0 intersubjective\u00a0 space\u00a0 between\u00a0 the\u00a0 couple\u00a0 and\u00a0 the\u00a0 analytic\u00a0 therapist\u00a0 affords\u00a0 a\u00a0 therapeutic opportunity for novel cultural forms to be borne and discovered within the intimacy of the couple and family.<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0 analyst\u2019s\u00a0 internal\u00a0 stance\u00a0 should\u00a0 enable\u00a0 him\/her\u00a0 to\u00a0 avoid\u00a0 developing\u00a0 a\u00a0 defensive\u00a0 linear\u00a0 understanding,\u00a0 and\u00a0 support\u00a0 the\u00a0 elaboration\u00a0 of\u00a0 a\u00a0 new\u00a0 history\u00a0 that\u00a0 integrates\u00a0 the\u00a0 couple\u00a0 and family\u2019s past with their present and future.<\/p>\n<p>The distress within couples and families can partially be understood as arising from a resistance to sustain\u00a0 a\u00a0 position\u00a0 of\u00a0 negative\u00a0 capability,\u00a0 so\u00a0 germane\u00a0 to\u00a0 their\u00a0 ultimate\u00a0 growth,\u00a0 creativity,\u00a0 and\u00a0 evolution.<\/p>\n<p>The 2018 IACFP Congress will invite clinical contributions that employ psychoanalytic observation and an in-\u00ad\u2010depth study of transference and countertransference, and that give us the opportunity to\u00a0 study\u00a0 the\u00a0 convergences\u00a0 and\u00a0 divergences\u00a0 of\u00a0 contemporary\u00a0 psychoanalytic\u00a0 technique\u00a0 with\u00a0 couples and families.<\/p>\n<h3>Read also the
